Benefits of Nursing – Beyond the Paycheck

The nursing profession offers much more than just a paycheck. It affords nurses the opportunity to thrive personally, professionally, and as community members. Few professions offer the variety of opportunities that nursing does.

Nurses can begin a professional career quicker than in many other fields. With an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a nurse can become licensed within two years of beginning his or her nursing education. Licensed practical or vocational nurses begin even faster. Further degrees can be obtained while making a good salary. Often, employers offer tuition reimbursement for nurses seeking to obtain a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nursing.

Most hospitals and institutions offer well rounded benefit packages that include health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans and paid time off, Often, facilities offer discounts for services provided at their institutions. Some offer daycare, gym memberships, uniform allowances, discount tickets to community events and more

Since nursing care is a year round, twenty four hour a day need, nurses may elect to work hours that meet their personal needs. Full time, part time, and per diem positions are available. Travel positions provide housing and opportunities to explore.

Nurses work in a variety of settings. This affords occasions to choose jobs that have a selection of shift lengths. Staffing choices can be a real boon to nurses with children or nurses that are continuing their education. Scheduling flexibility is becoming increasingly desirable as the nursing work force ages.

It is rare to hear a nurse say “I am bored with being a nurse.” Diverse employment prospects exist. A nurse may choose to work with children, in a community, in a hospital, or as a flight nurse. A career in nursing offers all of these opportunities and many other options. If a nurse tires of one type of nursing, endless chances for new experiences are available.

Often, young nurses desire exciting, fast paced positions. A nurse with children may desire flexibility. Mid career, positions that offer high pay and managerial responsibilities may be sought. Seasoned nurses sometimes want work that is physically less demanding. Nursing can provide interesting work throughout the lifespan.

In a rapidly changing healthcare environment, nurses are at the forefront of planning and implementing changes. Many nurses enjoy being part of such a dynamic profession.

Nursing is meaningful work that benefits people who are experiencing physical, mental, or spiritual challenges. Nurses make life changing differences in people’s lives. Helping to relieve dis-ease and empowering patients to live healthier, happier lives is satisfying for the nurse. Few professions offer workers the privilege of being with others at key times of their lives, such as during the birth of a child or loss of a loved one. To know that you have helped to save a life or participated in a surgery that made a deaf child hear provokes feelings that words can not describe.

Since nurses witness suffering and crises, they are aware of how precious good health and life are. Spiritual growth, caring, and gratitude develop. Nurses become the heart of families and catalysts for caring communities. They perfect communication and interpersonal skills that aid them in their own lives. An appreciation for diversity, tolerance and patience, is cultivated. Nursing makes the nurse a better person.
