The government has an amazing scholarship program for student nurses worth considering. It’s called the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program. This is an excellent program which helps students enrolled in LPN, ADN, BSN or graduate nursing programs. They also assist nursing students in bridge programs, such as RN to BSN or RN to NP programs.
Imagine having your nursing tuition, books, fees, uniforms and clinical supplies paid for. That’s not all, this program also pays a generous monthly stipend for the duration of time you’re in school. So, read on if you’re interested.
The Nurse Corps Scholarship program will pay for tuition, fees and other educational expenses in exchange for working in a facility which is considered to have a critical shortage of nurses after graduation. Nurses will have to work for a minimum of two years in this facility and receive the same pay as other graduate nurses. Most of these scholarship awards are reserved for nursing students pursuing a master’s level nurse practitioner degree.
In addition to having tuition and other educational expenses paid for, such as books, uniforms, fees and clinical supplies; students receive a monthly stipend of $1,289.00 per month.
In order to be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:
- Be a United States Citizen.
- Be enrolled in a nursing program, either Diploma, ADN, BSN or graduate nursing school at an accredited nursing school in the United States.
- Classes must begin by September 30.
- A student must not have any Federal Judgment Liens.
- Must be free from existing service commitments.
- Must not be delinquent on a Federal debt.
Preference is given to students who demonstrate the greatest financial need and who are currently enrolled or accepted in an accredited undergraduate or graduate nursing program as a full-time student.
Application Process
The application process for the Nurse Corps Scholarship program is pretty lengthy, so it’s best to start as early as possible. There are PDF documents on their site which explain about the application and how it should be filled out. If the application is not filled out properly, you will not be considered for the scholarship. There are many documents you’ll need to get together, such as transcripts and proof of U.S. citizenship documents.
In 2012, there were 263 recipients of the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program. The next round of scholarships will be awarded in 2014, so the deadline for the application to be received is in spring of 2014.
